How Long Do Coffee Beans Last? Storage Tips for Indian Kitchens
Whole coffee beans taste their best for about a month after the roast date. Ground coffee fades much faster: try to use it within 1 to 2 weeks of opening. Coffee doesn't really "go bad" like milk, but it does go flat. In a hot, humid Indian kitchen it happens faster, so how you store it matters.
How long does coffee stay fresh?
| Type | Tastes best | Still fine, a little flatter |
|---|---|---|
| Whole beans, sealed bag | About 1 to 4 weeks after the roast date | Up to 6 to 8 weeks |
| Whole beans, opened | 2 to 3 weeks | About a month |
| Ground coffee, opened | 1 to 2 weeks | 3 to 4 weeks |
| Brewed coffee | Within 30 minutes | Cold brew concentrate keeps about a week in the fridge |
Many coffee experts put peak flavour at around 5 to 21 days after roasting (Trade Coffee). That is why the roast date matters more than the "best before" date, which is often a year away.
Why does coffee go stale?
Roasted coffee is full of aroma, the oils and gases that make it smell and taste good. Four things slowly take that away:
- Air: oxygen dulls the flavour. Ground coffee has far more surface touching the air, so it fades much faster than whole beans.
- Moisture: humidity makes coffee taste flat and, in bad cases, musty.
- Heat: a warm spot speeds everything up.
- Light: sunlight through a glass jar slowly damages the flavour.
How to store coffee in an Indian kitchen
- Keep it in the bag it came in, or an airtight, opaque container. A good steel dabba with a tight lid works well. Skip clear glass jars on the counter, however nice they look.
- Squeeze out the air. After each use, press the air out of the bag, roll the top down tightly and clip it.
- Keep it away from the stove. The shelf above the gas or next to the chimney is the worst spot in the kitchen. A cool, dark cupboard is best.
- Use a dry spoon. A wet spoon adds moisture to the whole bag.
- Skip the fridge. Every time you take coffee out, moisture condenses on it. Coffee also soaks up smells, and you don't want your beans tasting of yesterday's sambar.
Monsoon tips
Humidity is coffee's enemy, and from June to September many Indian homes are damp for weeks.
- Buy smaller amounts more often. A 250 g bag you finish in two to three weeks stays fresher than a big bag that sits for two months.
- Prefer whole beans if you have a grinder. They hold up to humidity better than ground coffee.
- Close the container fast. Don't leave it open while the kettle boils.
- Bin it if it smells musty or shows mould. Stale coffee is just flat. Mouldy coffee is not safe to drink.
Should you freeze coffee beans?
Only if you bought much more than you can finish in a month. If you do:
- Split the beans into small, airtight portions, one week's worth each.
- Take out one portion at a time and let it reach room temperature before opening, so moisture doesn't form on the beans.
- Never put a portion back once it has thawed.
For a normal 250 g bag, the freezer isn't worth the trouble. A cool cupboard is enough.
How much should you buy?
Buy what you will finish in about three weeks. At 15 g of coffee per cup:
| You drink | A 250 g bag lasts |
|---|---|
| 1 cup a day | About 16 days |
| 2 cups a day | About 8 days |
| Two people, 1 cup each | About 8 days |
How to tell if your coffee is stale
- It barely smells when you open the bag.
- No bubbles when hot water hits the grounds. Fresh coffee puffs up and foams for a few seconds.
- The cup tastes flat, papery or harshly bitter, however you brew it. See why your coffee tastes bitter for other causes.

FAQs
Do coffee beans expire?
Not in the way milk does. Old coffee is usually safe but tastes flat. Throw it out only if it smells musty or shows mould.
Should I store coffee in the fridge?
No. The fridge adds moisture every time you open it, and coffee absorbs food smells. A cool, dark cupboard is better.
Is a steel container good for coffee?
Yes, if the lid is tight. Steel blocks light, and a good seal keeps air and humidity out.
How long does ground coffee last after opening?
It tastes best within 1 to 2 weeks and is still fine up to about 3 to 4 weeks if sealed well.
Why does my coffee bag have a small round valve?
Freshly roasted coffee gives off gas for days. The one-way valve lets that gas out without letting air in, which keeps the coffee fresh and stops the bag from puffing up.
